McKinney – Free Event! Put your best face forward in a Carved Pumpkin Contest at Chestnut Square Historic Village this Sunday, October 23rd, at 1:00. Contest judges will be looking for the scariest, funniest and most original carved pumpkin. There will also be trick-or-treating for traditional treats among the historic houses and a costume contest at 2:30. Old-fashioned games will be played such as apple bobbing and catch the donut. Join in a sing along around the campfire and enjoy a good yarn. At 3:00, the history of Halloween and Jack-o-lanterns will be presented in the schoolhouse for children and adults alike. Children’s activities and crafts will be included among the usual heritage crafters that are featured each month. Chestnut Square Historic Village is located on the corner of Chestnut and Anthony streets just south of Downtown McKinney. While on the grounds be sure to visit all of our special guests, our crafters, and when available stagecoach rides and historic photography. Taste delicious Dutch oven cooking. Smell the teepee’s campfire. See how butter is churned. Touch cloth woven on an antique loom. Hear the school bell as it rings the children in. Yesterday’s living is a treat for the senses! Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated. Living History Days are held on the fourth Sunday of each month, excepting holidays, from 1 to 4 PM at the grounds of Chestnut Square Historic Village. The Living History Guild of Collin County and re-enactors will be on hand to demonstrate their special trades and roles in 19th century McKinney. As you tour, you will be able to talk with the crafters and sign up for classes to learn their trades. Classes on Dutch oven cooking, rag rug making, weaving, and others are available. Please call Chestnut Square at 972-562-8790 for class information. Memberships to both the Chestnut Square Historic Village and the Heritage
Crafter’s Guild are available. We are seeking people interested
in local history, architecture, genealogy, antiques, old time crafts,
re-enactment and more. Membership benefits include member’s only
events, free admission to the museum for tours, free quarterly newsletter
subscription, and more. Volunteers are also needed on a daily basis. | |
